Wherever There is You

swishywillow:

Freshman Kat Everdeen is torn between writing fic about Harry Potter’s dead parents, reluctantly bonding with her surly roommate and her ridiculously cheerful new friend Peeta, dodging calls from her best friend back home, missing her baby sister who seems to be growing up much too fast, and surviving her surprisingly difficult creative writing class. Real life, unfortunately, is not as easy as fanfiction makes it out to be.

Inspired by the book Fangirl.

I am so excited to read this!!

So, I just received this little gem in my inbox:

amazingpanemmemories,

A new review has been posted to your story.

Story: The Endless In-Between
Chapter: 1. Chapter 1

From: Guest
—————————-

:I really do like this story, and think it has a thrilling and awesome plot, but i’m going to have to give up on it. This is simply because it is never updated it’s been st least 2 months since your last update, and that would be justifiable if there was only 1 person working on it, but since there is 3, it’s hard to imagine 4k words taking that long to write and edit. I guess this is goodbye!
——————————

I have a few things to say to this and I really hope soamazinghere and madefrommemoriesff don’t mind.

Dear Self-Entitled Anon,

Normally, stuff like this rolls off my back but you’ve really struck a nerve on this comment. And since you decided to write it as an anon, I feel like this is the only way to respond.

First, I’d like to say, goodbye. You have every right to not want to stick with a story that you don’t feel gets updated in a timely manner. But, in all honesty, what you should have done was just walk away before leaving a snarky little message to intentionally hurt (or teach a lesson to, I guess) my fellow co-authors and me. There was absolutely no need for you to take it upon yourself to do this.

Second, you seem to have the idea that 4,000 words can just be written in no time at all. Well, to that I have to say a) our chapters are NEVER only 4,000 words long. We keep a fairly strict policy of having a 5 - 7K word minimum. And that takes a lot of time and effort. b) after being written, our chapters go through an extensive review period. We go through peer review, beta, and pre-reader editing stages before a single word is published. c) we do this, for fun, in our spare time. The three of us have talked about our rate of publishing, and while of course we would like to get chapters out quicker, the three of us realize that we all have lives outside of fanfiction and we have to take care of real life first. We are all committed to seeing this story to the end, no matter how long it takes. We like working with each other and we all believe in the work we have put out so far. I’m really sorry for your lack of patience, because I really think the best is yet to come.

Third, the lack of update for the current chapter rests solely on my shoulders. I am up next and not that I really should have to justify my lack of production, let me just go ahead and inform you why the next chapter hasn’t been produced as quickly as you’d like. During these two months my grandfather passed away, my mother, who has been living with my husband and I for the past 15 months since my step father passed away last year, has been renovating a house and is now moving into it this past week, which means most of my spare time has been spent helping her. My husbands birthday has recently passed, to which I made sure to actually focus on him. And to top it off, I work in an office for the company (which I shall not name in fear of anyone tracking this) that recently decided to screw over the healthcare of women in this country. So, needless to say, when I am online in my personal time, I’m mostly looking for a new job. Oh, did I also mention my brother and his family, whom I only get to see twice a year, are in town right now?

Fourth, I have a nasty case if writer’s block. I actually wrote my first Drabble the other day. I’m super excited to have actually made that step towards writing again.

So, again, goodbye anon reader. I’m sorry it didn’t work out. You are always welcome to read again. We don’t mind if anyone stops reading our story for a while just to come back to it when they have the time in their lives.

Love,

Hello, Sweetie! I’ve missed you!

I’m sorry if this isn’t any good, but here you go :)

“Prim? Prim? I can’t hear you, my phone’s acting up. Hold on.” Katniss looks down at her phone, irritated to see only two small bars of reception. She shakes it in anger, foolishly trying to will it to pick up a better signal. She puts the ancient, blocky cell phone to her ear.

“Jesus, Katniss. Get a new phone. How long have you had that thing?” Prim asked, frustrated, used the common occurrence when talking on the phone to her older, miserly sister. “You know that half the time the phones are free with the plan.”

“Well, when you are working two jobs to help put your younger sister through school, let me know how much time you have to go cell phone shopping.”

Katniss waits for her sister’s remark, but it doesn’t come. She alternates glancing at her phone and placing it up to her ear while yelling her sister’s name to no avail. She looks down at the screen on her flip phone one last time before there is a loud bang. Her car comes to a jolting stop and the side of her face slams into the steering wheel.

“Son of a bitch.” She groans while rubbing the left side of her jaw. The last thing she needs is an expensive ticket and her insurance rates rising. Hopefully, going slow down the quiet neighborhood street will work in her favor. She knew the four way stop was coming up, but being distracted by her failing phone made her miss the large red sign she stops for at least twice a day.

She’s startled by a gentle tapping on the glass of her driver’s side door. With a deep sigh, she unbuckles her seatbelt and braces herself for the rightfully angry person she just ran in to. Instead, she looks up and into the bluest pair of eyes, and possibly the reddest cheeks, she’s ever seen.

He opens the door for her, panic all over his face. “I am so sorry! Are you hurt? Do you need an ambulance?”

Katniss dismisses his concerns with a wave of her hand. “I’m fine, I just popped my jaw on the steering wheel. I’ve been through worse.” She gets out of the car and takes in the scene before her. She was worried about having rear ended someone, but she now sees she’s hit the back wheel panel of a brand new metallic orange truck. Her stomach drops at how expensive the vehicle looks.

“I didn’t know there was a four-way stop there. This is my first time in this neighborhood.” He observes her for a second, really looking at her for the first time. His next question isn’t as panicked, but more shy, “Are you sure you don’t want an ambulance?”

She nods, when it finally occurs to her that he was apologizing to her. “Yeah, I’m fine. Why did you say you were sorry?”

He looks at her like she just grew a second head. A very pretty second head, if he was being honest. “Because I ran a stop sign causing you to crash into me?”

She looks into his eyes, his impossibly blue eyes, and realizes she can’t let him take the blame for this. She can’t owe him like that. “It wasn’t you, I ran my stop sign. My phone was acting up, I wasn’t paying attention.”

He chuckles at her admission and runs a hand through his wavy blonde hair. “So, we’re both terrible drivers?”

She smiles, despite the seriousness of the situation, “Yeah, I guess so.”

They both stare at each other for a moment, before Katniss breaks the awkward silence, “So, isn’t this the part where we exchange insurance information?”

“Oh, yeah, let me run to my truck and grab the card.” She watches him jog the few feet to the passenger door, trying not to notice the way his t-shirt clings to his arms, or how nice his ass is when he leans over to reach inside his glove box.

Realizing she needs to give him the same information, she ducks inside her car to grab her purse. Hopefully, he didn’t notice her checking him out. She rummages through the small leather bag, and hands him the card when he returns.

“Katniss? That’s an unusual name. It’s pretty.” She blushes, taking the card he brought for her. “I’m Peeta, by the way.”

They exchange information and make easy small talk, something Katniss hardly ever does, before the police arrive much sooner than either one of them had wanted.

Luckily, Officer Darius, one of Katniss’s oldest friends, is called to the scene and writes up both of their tickets with the smallest possible infractions. Hopefully keeping both of them out of trouble with their insurance companies.

They watch the police car pull away and it’s funny how neither one of them moves to get to their own vehicle.

Peeta kicks at the ground before speaking, “Well, I guess this is goodbye.”

Katniss nods slowly, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear. “Looks like it.”

“And you’re sure you’re going to be okay?”

“Uh-huh.” She looks over at her old car, slightly dented and worse for wear, trying to get up the nerve and do something bold for once. She slaps her hand on her forehead, cringing when it rattles her aching jaw, “Oh, you know what, I forgot to write down the last couple of numbers from my insurance card.”

He’s confused, but doesn’t say anything as he hands her the slip of paper. She takes a deep breath, hoping this isn’t one of the biggest mistakes she’s ever made, and writes down a few extra digits on the piece of scrap paper. She hands it over to him and makes a beeline for her car.

He gives her a small wave as she drives off, wishing the circumstances for their meeting had been anything else, until he glances at the piece of paper crumpled up in his hand. He doesn’t bother hiding the broad smile on his face when he sees the new addition is her phone number.

Thank you to everyone that sent me drabble requests! I will post them as soon as I can. :)

Artists may get pallet swaps, but we writers get this! Send in two characters (or a ship) and a number, and then I'll write the situation that comes up.
1: Person A attempts to poison Person B over dinner.
2: It's Person A's wedding day, and Person B has showed up to win them back.
3: Person A and Person B attempt to change a lightbulb.
4: Person A and Person B end up on a kiss cam at a sports game - although they've never met each other before.
5: Person B performs a big romantic gesture for Person A right in front of all of their friends/coworkers.
6: Person A and Person B are trapped in a burning building where only one of them can escape.
7: Person B creates an experimental formula, and wants to test it on Person A.
8: Person A meets Person B's parents.
9: Person A and Person B are the only two left in the survival games, and only one can win.
10: Person A and Person B meet unexpectedly when they're both distracted and they literally crash into each other.
11: Person A falls off a structure, right into Person B's arms.
12: Person B leaves Person A at the alter.
13: Person A attempts to cook dinner for Person B with disastrous results.
14: Person A is Person B's boss, but feels conflicted since they are also attracted to them.
15: Person B ends up in a strange partnership with Person A during a crisis.
16: Person A and Person B both get picked for an exchange program halfway across the world.
17: Person A falls in love with Person B - but they speak different languages.
18: Person A is from a big city, but when they decide to visit the country they meet Person B.

Wow! Thank you so much!

Honestly, I want to say they aren’t. I’ve picked back up on Finally Begin, but I’m really not happy with what I’ve done so far.

As far as thirtysomething… one day I might get the wild hair to pick it up again, but at this point, I just don’t know. I’m sorry those aren’t the answers you probably wanted, but I’m the worst.  :(
